Felons Sentenced for Federal Firearms Violations

A string of recent sentencing decisions highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to crack down on those who misuse firearms in Northeast Louisiana.

At the forefront of these efforts is Terrance Deon Jordan, a 35-year-old Mississippi man who was sentenced to 8 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to authorities, Jordan was stopped by a Louisiana State Police trooper in Delhi, Louisiana, after speeding at 104 miles per hour in a 70-mile-an-hour zone. A rifle with a shortened stock was found in the vehicle, and Jordan was subsequently charged with the federal offense.

Jordan’s case is just one of several recent sentencing decisions in Northeast Louisiana. Daryl Nelson, a 47-year-old Monroe man, was sentenced to 6 and one-half years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Nelson was found with a loaded pistol during a search warrant executed by Monroe police in 2017.

Nelson was not alone in his crime. Codefendant Santron Jones, 33, of Monroe, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jones was also found with a loaded pistol during the same search warrant.

But perhaps the most egregious case of firearms misuse in the region involves Dustin B. Demoss, a 32-year-old Grayson man who was sentenced to 3 years in prison for illegally making and selling silencers. Demoss used a Facebook site called ‘Angel of Death Tactical’ to sell the silencers, which were manufactured in his home with the use of drill presses.

The sentencing decisions were made as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. The program has been successful in bringing together law enforcement agencies to crack down on those who misuse firearms.

The sentencing decisions serve as a reminder that the consequences of misusing firearms can be severe. As Attorney General Jeff Sessions has stated, ‘turning the tide of rising violent crime in America is a top priority.’ The sentencing decisions in Northeast Louisiana are a step in the right direction towards achieving that goal.
