Felon in Possession Charge Catches Up to Greenville Man

A 26-year-old Greenville man is set to spend up to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Joshua Matthew Garrett, of Greenville, South Carolina, entered his guilty plea in federal court in Greenville, South Carolina, to violating 18 U.S.C. 922(g). United States District Court Judge Bruce H. Hendricks of Charleston accepted the plea and will impose sentence after reviewing the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

According to evidence presented by the government, on November 15, 2016, members of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) made contact with Garrett in his vehicle. As Garrett opened the driver’s side door, an officer observed a handgun in the pocket of the driver’s door.

The officer seized the loaded Harrington & Richardson .22 caliber revolver, which had been previously confirmed as being in the possession of Garrett, a convicted felon who had not received a pardon or had his rights restored to possess firearms or ammunition.

This case is part of “Operation Real-Time,” a program aimed at identifying individuals with significant criminal histories who continue to possess firearms in the Upstate community. The initiative has resulted in the expedited federal prosecution of over 90 defendants and the seizure of approximately 110 firearms, as well as assorted ammunition, from prohibited persons since August 2015.

U.S. Attorney Beth Drake commended the partnership between state and federal agencies that led to the adoption of the case, saying, “We work best when we work together. This ‘real time’ identification of high-risk offenders is smart policing, and we welcome the opportunity to work alongside our state chiefs and sheriffs in taking violent repeat offenders out of our communities.”

The case was investigated by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Max Cauthen is assigned to the case in the Greenville U.S. Attorney’s Office.
