Felon in Possession Charges Filed Against Redding Man

A 26-year-old Redding man has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm after he was found to be in possession of a firearm on two separate occasions, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced. Tyson Farrell, who has multiple felony convictions, is facing a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

According to court documents, Farrell was arrested in September 2020 after a law enforcement officer stopped him for driving without a valid license. A records check revealed that Farrell was on post-release community supervision from a prior conviction, and a search of his vehicle turned up a partially dismantled Ruger Model 77/17 in the back seat.

Farrell was arrested again in January 2021 after a police officer stopped a car in which he was a passenger. The officer recognized Farrell and confirmed through a records check that he was the subject of a pending felony warrant. A search of the vehicle turned up a Colt .38 caliber revolver in a laundry bag in the back seat where Farrell had been sitting.

The case is the product of an investigation by the Redding Police Department, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Conolly is prosecuting the case.

The charges are only allegations, and Farrell is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, Farrell faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
