Dequan Mitchell, a 23-year-old Vallejo man with a history of violence, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Mitchell, who murdered a man at the age of 16, was found to be involved in the illicit sale of a firearm online while on probation. The firearm, a loaded Glock 23 with an extended clip, was discovered at his mother’s home and was later found to be stolen from a carjacking victim in October 2025.
The investigation, which was conducted by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, the Solano County Probation Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, revealed that Mitchell had posted the firearm for sale on an online gun trafficking forum for $1,200.
Mitchell’s prior conviction prohibits him from possessing firearms, making his actions a serious offense. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hitt and is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to combat violent crime and make communities safer.
The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb, reflects the seriousness of Mitchell’s offense and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing firearms laws and preventing the illicit sale of firearms.
