Ismael Vega, a 42-year-old Westlake man, threw rocks and lighted debris at California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers during an anti-ICE riot in downtown Los Angeles on June 8, 2025. The violent protest erupted two days after federal agents enforced U.S. immigration laws, leading to a chaotic scene on the Main Street overpass above U.S. Highway 101. Vega’s actions put the officers at substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.
Vega pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement during a civil disorder. According to his plea agreement, he lit a large piece of cardboard on fire and dropped it onto a CHP vehicle, while also helping others to light debris on fire.
The incident resulted in a CHP vehicle being set ablaze, with damages totaling $253,415. Vega was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and ordered to pay restitution. His co-defendant, Yachua Mauricio Flores, was also involved in the incident.
