An investigation into a high-speed chase in 2012 has led to a 5-year prison sentence for a Metairie man. Joseph C. Delay, 42, was sentenced to 5 years incarceration and 3 years supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.
The incident began on March 9, 2012, at 2:51 a.m. when a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy pulled over Delay for operating a motor vehicle without a license plate. The defendant drove away, leading to a high-speed chase. Deputies eventually located the vehicle, but Delay was no longer inside. A loaded .380 caliber Lorcin semi-automatic pistol bearing Serial Number 462237 was found on the driver’s side floorboard.
Court records show that Delay has a history of violent offenses. In 1995, he was convicted in Criminal District Court for the Parish of Orleans of Forcible Rape, Armed Robbery, and Aggravated Burglary. He also has convictions for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in 2004 and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in 2010.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba leading the prosecution. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Delay was initially charged in May 2012 with Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and with Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. The conviction marks a significant sentence in a case that showcases the importance of community safety.
