Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Spirit Lake Man 63-Month Prison Term
A 30-year-old Spirit Lake man has been sentenced to more than 5 years in federal prison following a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon. Dylan Robert Hurd, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, was sentenced to 63 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.
Hurd’s guilty plea came after he admitted to knowingly possessing a .380 ACP caliber Smith & Wesson M&P handgun, despite being restricted from possessing a firearm following a 2017 conviction for assault causing serious bodily injury in Dickinson County, Iowa.
According to court documents, Hurd was convicted of assault in 2017 and, as a result, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Nevertheless, he knowingly possessed the handgun, which led to his guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to address the root causes of crime.
Hurd is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to serve his sentence. He will also be required to serve a 3-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons and investigated by the Spirit Lake Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
