Felon Gun Charges Land Lynn Man 78 Months in Prison

BOSTON – In a shocking case of blatant disregard for the law, Paul Votano, a 38-year-old Lynn man, was sentenced to 78 months in prison and three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

According to the evidence presented in court, Votano arranged the sale of a Romarm Cuguir, AK-47 rifle and over 300 rounds of ammunition with a cooperating witness in September 2019. Following the sale, agents observed Votano carrying the ammunition and storing it in a vehicle, despite being prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to prior felony convictions.

The case against Votano was brought to light through the efforts of Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell and James Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Philip A. Mallard of Mendell’s Organized Crime and Gang Unit prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to develop effective, locally-based strategies to combat violent crime.

Votano pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition on May 13, 2021. The sentence handed down by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf sends a strong message that violating firearms laws will not be tolerated in our community.

The case against Votano serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. As we continue to work towards safer communities, it is imperative that we hold individuals accountable for their actions and take a stand against violent crime.

This case is a prime example of the commitment of law enforcement to keep our communities safe and the importance of community involvement in reducing violent crime.
