Felony Gun Possession Lands Fort Myers Man Behind Bars
A Fort Myers man will spend the next seven years and three months in federal prison for violating federal gun laws, U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced.
Basilio Amaury Bron, Jr., 35, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell after being found guilty of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The Court also ordered him to forfeit the handgun and ammunition used in the offense.
The conviction stems from an incident in which a Fort Myers Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force officer observed Bron discard litter from the passenger window of a vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle and discovered Bron had an active warrant for unpaid child support. A search of Bron’s person revealed a loaded .25 caliber handgun in his front waistband.
At the time of the incident, Bron had four previous felony convictions, making him prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes members of the Fort Myers Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force, with additional assistance provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David G. Lazarus.
The case is part of the ‘Project Safe Neighborhoods’ Program, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing gun violence. U.S. Attorney Bentley is coordinating the effort in the Middle District of Florida in cooperation with federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
Bron’s guilty verdict was handed down on November 12, 2015, following a bench trial before Judge Chappell. The sentence handed down by Judge Chappell is a significant blow to those involved in gun-related crimes in the area, and serves as a warning to those who would also seek to disregard federal law.
