A 19-year-old man was arraigned in federal court yesterday on charges of importing 11,490 fentanyl pills and 75 pounds of methamphetamine and heroin at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Cristian Araujo Aguirre, a United States citizen living in Tijuana, was arrested on August 1, 2018, after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered anomalies in his vehicle’s door panels and spare tire.
According to court records, Aguirre was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, which contained eight packages of heroin, 13 packages of methamphetamine, and 11,490 fentanyl pills disguised to resemble oxycodone.
The pills tested positive for fentanyl, and the methamphetamine weighed a total of 61 pounds.
Aguirre’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 16, 2018, before Magistrate Judge Barbara Major.
The government has requested Aguirre’s detention based on the risk of flight, and a detention hearing is set for August 7, 2018.
Aguirre faces a maximum penalty of 10 years minimum to life in prison and a $1,000,000 fine if convicted.
The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
