NEWARK, N.J. – Jessie Mayfield, 61, of Paterson, New Jersey, is headed to federal prison for over a decade. Mayfield was sentenced today to 125 months for peddling fentanyl and illegally possessing a firearm while doing so, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.
Mayfield pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin, admitting to one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances – specifically, fentanyl – and one count of possessing that firearm while furthering his drug trafficking operation. The feds didn’t mess around.
The bust went down August 24, 2021. Authorities found Mayfield with a quantity of fentanyl clearly packaged for street-level distribution. Alongside the deadly opioid, he possessed a Ruger .22 caliber pistol and a box packed with 95 .22 caliber long rifle cartridges. A dangerous combination, to say the least.
This wasn’t Mayfield’s first rodeo with the law. His prior felony conviction played a significant role in the severity of the sentence. The judge didn’t just stop at prison time, either. Mayfield will also face three years of supervised release after he serves his 125-month sentence – assuming he makes it through.
The successful investigation was a coordinated effort. Credit goes to the New Jersey State Parole Board, led by Chairman Samuel J. Plumeri Jr.; the Paterson Police Department, under the direction of Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Acting Special Agent in Charge Ross A. Marchetti heading up the Newark Field Division. They put the pieces together and brought Mayfield down.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dong Joo Lee of the Cybercrimes Unit handled the prosecution. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks in New Jersey. Mayfield’s sentence sends a clear message: dealing fentanyl and carrying a firearm will land you a long stretch behind bars.
