AUSTIN, Texas – A 20-year-old San Marcos man has been taken down by the law and is now facing a long stretch behind bars for his role in peddling deadly fentanyl in Hays County.
Colten Romeo Thayer, 20, was sentenced in a federal court in Austin to 120 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Thayer was arrested during a traffic stop on Aug. 29, 2022, and a search of his vehicle uncovered a bag containing 11 grams of the highly potent synthetic opioid.
According to court documents, Thayer had been purchasing fentanyl pills from other dealers in and around Hays County for personal use and for the purpose of selling. Thayer’s actions had the potential to wreak havoc on the community, and it’s a miracle he was caught before more lives were lost.
Co-defendant Anthony Perez Rios, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing fentanyl. Rios remains in federal custody, scheduled to be sentenced May 23.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza of the Western District of Texas made the announcement, vowing to continue the fight against the scourge of fentanyl trafficking in the region.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the San Marcos Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel Cohen prosecuting the case. Thayer’s guilty plea was entered on Dec. 21, 2023.
Thayer’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in fentanyl trafficking. This synthetic opioid has ravaged communities across the country, claiming countless lives and leaving families shattered.
