TAMPA, FL – Theron Marquale Mathews, 37, of New Port Richey, Florida, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after pleading guilty to running a large-scale fentanyl operation out of his home. U.S. District Judge William F. Jung handed down the sentence today, sending a clear message that peddling poison and packing heat won’t be tolerated in the Sunshine State.
Mathews was convicted of possession of 400 grams or more of fentanyl with the intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The bust, which occurred on March 14, 2024, revealed a full-blown fentanyl processing lab operating within Mathews’ New Port Richey residence. This wasn’t some small-time operation; this was a serious attempt to flood the streets with a deadly substance.
Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) raided the home acting on an arrest warrant. What they found was a chilling array of tools for manufacturing and packaging fentanyl, alongside a significant stash of the drug – a staggering 980.8 grams. But Mathews wasn’t just dealing death; he was prepared to defend his operation with force. Investigators also recovered a loaded Glock 20 10mm pistol, a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 40 caliber pistol, and an ATI Bulldog semi-automatic shotgun.
The court didn’t just lock up Mathews; they also seized his ill-gotten gains. An order of forfeiture was entered for the three firearms found at the scene, as well as $41,176 in cash, all proceeds directly linked to his drug trafficking activities. Mathews entered his guilty plea on March 11, 2025, hoping for leniency. The judge wasn’t buying it.
This case was a coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the ATF, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Tampa Police Department, and the Pasco Sheriff’s Office. They worked tirelessly to dismantle Mathews’ operation and bring him to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Beckman skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring a strong conviction and a substantial sentence.
