Columbus, GA – In a major blow to the city’s underworld, Fernando Brown, also known as “Nino,” was convicted of distributing massive quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana while armed. The 33-year-old repeat offender was found guilty by a federal jury after a four-day trial, which marked the 30th conviction or guilty plea in the Operation Sweet Silence case.
The multi-agency law enforcement effort, part of the Department of Justice’s nationwide Operation Take Back America, targeted a notorious criminal organization in and around Columbus, Georgia. Brown’s crimes were particularly egregious, as he conspired to traffic over 100 pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The jury also found him guilty of possessing a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities.
Brown’s conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies working together to dismantle the organization. “This defendant was responsible for fueling violence and harming the community through his crimes,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “His conviction is a significant step towards justice and a safer community.”
Brown faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 22. The federal system offers no parole, ensuring that Brown will serve his sentence in full. The conviction is a major victory in the ongoing fight against organized crime and drug trafficking in the Columbus area.
The Operation Sweet Silence case has resulted in 30 convictions or guilty pleas, with Brown’s being the latest. The case is a prime example of the Department of Justice’s commitment to cracking down on criminal organizations and cartels nationwide.
