DEL RIO, Texas – In a shocking turn of events, a former Maverick County detective was arrested yesterday, March 28, 2024, by the FBI in San Antonio on charges related to his alleged role in a bribery scheme.
According to court documents, Fernando Leonel Chacon Jr., 41, allegedly devised a scheme to use his position with the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office to enrich himself by soliciting and accepting bribes of money and other things of value in exchange for removing pending tickets and arrest warrants against citizens.
The brazen scheme, which allegedly took place in Maverick County, Texas, has left many questioning the integrity of law enforcement in the region. Chacon is accused of using his position to extort money and other benefits from citizens in exchange for his assistance in removing outstanding warrants and tickets.
