South Texas Mayor Arrested for Bribery and Embezzlement
McAllen, Texas – In a shocking turn of events, Rodrigo Lopez, the 38-year-old mayor of Penitas, has been taken into custody and charged with bribery and embezzlement. According to U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery, Lopez is accused of embezzling approximately $70,010 from the La Joya Independent School District (LJISD) between March and August 2018.
The indictment, which was returned on June 1, 2018, and unsealed today, alleges that Lopez offered or gave a bribe to an LJISD employee in connection with purchases made from his company, Xizaka LLC. The total amount of these purchases was approximately $70,010.
Lopez’s arrest occurred as he re-entered the United States at a Port of Entry in Hidalgo County. He is expected to make his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano tomorrow at 11 a.m.
If convicted, Lopez faces up to 10 years on each count. The FBI conducted the investigation with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives; Texas Department of Insurance; McAllen Police Department and Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Roberto Lopez is prosecuting the case.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
The case highlights the need for transparency and accountability in government and public institutions. The public has the right to know when their leaders are engaging in corrupt activities, and it’s the duty of journalists like us to expose these scandals and bring them to light.
