Alamdar S. Hamdani, SDTX U.S. Attorney Appointment, Texas 2024

McALLEN, Texas – Alamdar S. Hamdani, the first Asian American to hold the office, has been sworn in as the 24th presidentially-appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas.

Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane administered the oath of office to Hamdani at 10 a.m. today before an audience of federal court personnel, federal public defenders, and staff. This marks the start of Hamdani’s duties as the chief law enforcement officer responsible for prosecuting and defending the interests of the United States in the seventh largest district in the nation.

Hamdani’s background in the Department of Justice dates back to 2008, where he has held various positions, including an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the SDTX. He has been primarily responsible for the investigation and prosecution of national security and official corruption crimes.

During his tenure as an AUSA, Hamdani has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center. He received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999 and his B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993.

Hamdani’s appointment was made by President Biden, upon the recommendation of U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. The full Senate unanimously confirmed his appointment on December 6.

As the new U.S. Attorney, Hamdani will oversee the office’s operations, which include seven U.S. District Court divisions, representing 43 counties, and covering 44,000 square miles, serving nine million people.

Hamdani’s swearing-in ceremony marks a new chapter in the history of the SDTX, with the office welcoming its first Asian American U.S. Attorney. The appointment is seen as a significant milestone in the office’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
