Roanoke, VIRGINIA – A series of hearings at the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke saw five men plead guilty to credit card fraud and identity theft charges. Keyshawn Berchel Hunter, 27, Daquan Damese James, 24, Roland Marcell Bruce, 23, Markese Davon Robinson, 21, and Markese Tyshawn James, 22, each admitted their involvement in the scheme.
The group targeted rural communities in the southeast, using stolen credit card numbers to make purchases. Authorities in Pearisburg, Virginia, responded to a report of males attempting to use multiple debit cards at the local Wal-Mart. A loss prevention employee provided authorities with a description of the suspects’ vehicle, which led to the recovery of 16 Visa debit cards, 40 gift cards, and other fraudulent items.
Forensic examination by the United States Secret Service revealed that 89 of the recovered cards had been re-encoded with stolen credit card numbers. One conspirator admitted targeting Wal-Mart stores due to their efficient lines, which worked in their favor during their fraudulent activities.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the United States Secret Service, the Pearisburg Police Department, and the Giles County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Ashley B. Neese prosecuted the case for the United States.
While investigations continue, this plea hearing marks a significant victory in the fight against credit card fraud. The defendants face serious penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and fines.
