Five Meth Traffickers Sentenced in Western NC Ring

Five meth dealers are going down hard after a federal judge slammed them with prison terms of up to 15 years for flooding Western North Carolina with crystal meth. U.S. District Judge Kenneth D. Bell handed down the sentences today in Charlotte, targeting a crew that moved more than 12 kilograms of the drug between 2018 and 2020.

William Jay Allen, Jr., 29, of Vilas, N.C., took the heaviest hit—180 months behind bars, followed by five years of supervised release. Allen, identified as the source of supply, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and distribution of methamphetamine. His fingerprints were all over the operation, funneling poison into Ashe and Watauga Counties through a network of couriers and street-level sellers.

Justin Kevin Anderson, 31, of Boone, N.C., was sentenced to 135 months plus six years of supervision. Thomas Burns Shelley, III, 37, of Blowing Rock, N.C., got 132 months and five years supervised release. Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy and distribution charges. The two operated as key links in the chain, moving and selling the drug across county lines.

Jeffrey David Miller, of Sugar Grove, N.C., and Danielle Denise Dieters Ward, 42, of Morganton, N.C., each received 36 months in prison. Miller will serve three years supervised release; Ward, five. Both admitted to conspiracy and distribution with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Their roles, while smaller, fed an epidemic tearing through rural communities.

A sixth co-defendant, Timothy Wilson Critcher, 47, of Boone, N.C., awaits sentencing on December 7, 2021. All defendants are currently in U.S. Marshals custody and will be transferred to the Bureau of Prisons once facilities are designated. This case was part of a broader OCDETF-led crackdown that’s dismantled a regional network.

The Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) has so far prosecuted over 200 individuals in Western North Carolina, seizing more than 20 kilograms of crystal meth, $500,000 in cash, dozens of firearms, and other assets. Federal and local agencies, including ICE HSI, ATF, NC SBI, and multiple sheriff’s offices, collaborated on the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven R. Kaufman handled the prosecutions.
