A Florida man’s plans for a vacation in the US Virgin Islands went up in smoke when he was caught smuggling 28 kilograms of marijuana into the territory.
According to court documents, Davaunte Butler, 32, of Kissimmee, Florida, was arrested on April 8, 2026, at the Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas after US Customs and Border Protection agents discovered the marijuana in his luggage during a routine inspection of a flight from Atlanta, Georgia.
The luggage contained 61 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Butler was taken into custody and faces charges for smuggling marijuana into the US Virgin Islands.
Assistant United States Attorney Erik Tate is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by US Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations.
