Tommie Lee Nelson, Wire Fraud, Virginia 2024

ROANOKE, VA – A Miramar, Florida man is facing serious federal charges after allegedly fleecing a Lynchburg doctor out of nearly half a million dollars. Tommie Lee Nelson, 65, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Roanoke today and ordered detained pending trial on six counts of wire fraud.

The indictment paints a picture of a calculated, two-year scheme that began around April 2020. The victim, a Lynchburg doctor, was attempting to purchase a commercial building in Danville, Virginia, in partnership with an agricultural cooperative. Nelson, posing as a hard money lender, saw an opportunity and preyed on the doctor’s legitimate business venture.

Between July 2020 and 2021, Nelson allegedly convinced the doctor to wire him a total of almost $500,000. But the money never made it toward the building purchase. Instead, prosecutors allege Nelson funneled the funds into casinos and used it for personal expenses – a blatant betrayal of trust and a callous disregard for the victim’s financial well-being. As the deal crumbled in 2021, Nelson reportedly ghosted the doctor, cutting off all communication.

The victim pursued a civil case, ultimately winning a judgment against Nelson’s corporation in 2024. The presiding judge, recognizing the criminal nature of the scheme, immediately referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for a full criminal investigation. The FBI took the lead, culminating in Nelson’s arrest in July near Miami and his subsequent transport to Virginia.

“This wasn’t a bad investment; it was a calculated theft,” stated United States Attorney C. Todd Gilbert. If convicted on all six counts, Nelson faces a maximum punishment of 120 years in federal prison. Assistant United States Attorney Drew O. Inman is prosecuting the case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an allegation. Tommie Lee Nelson, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the evidence presented thus far paints a grim picture of a man motivated by greed and willing to exploit the trust of a hard-working doctor.
