Tampa Woman Scammed Drivers, Pocketed Insurance Funds

TAMPA, FL – Katrenia Lynette Harris, 54, of Tampa, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on five counts of wire fraud. U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe unsealed the indictment today, alleging Harris ran a calculated scheme preying on those seeking legitimate automobile insurance.

The indictment details how Harris fraudulently presented herself as an authorized agent for a major insurance carrier to individuals across the Middle District of Florida and beyond. She didn’t sell policies; she sold false security. Harris allegedly impersonated victims to acquire policy documents, then accepted payments – primarily through the Cash App – without ever forwarding the funds to the insurance company. This left numerous drivers unknowingly operating vehicles with cancelled policies.

The scheme wasn’t just about the money, it was about deception. Harris intentionally concealed the policy cancellations from her victims, keeping them in the dark while they believed they were legally covered. The U.S. Attorney’s office is seeking a forfeiture order of no less than $49,772.40, representing the known proceeds of Harris’s fraudulent activities. That’s money stolen from people who thought they were doing the right thing.

Federal investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working alongside the Florida Department of Financial Services – Bureau of Insurance Fraud, built the case against Harris. Victims who have been identified will be contacted directly regarding their rights under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act. Those who believe they may have been victimized and haven’t received notification are urged to visit https://www.justice.gov/usao-mdfl/katrenia_harris to self-identify.

Each count of wire fraud carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment. However, an indictment is not a conviction. Harris is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Duso is prosecuting the case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments.

This isn’t a victimless crime. Harris’s actions put innocent people at risk, both financially and physically. Driving without insurance isn’t just a legal issue; it’s a potential disaster waiting to happen. And she knowingly put people in that position for her own gain.
