Wilmington, Del. – In a stunning turn of events, the former Chief and Captain of the Bethany Beach Police Department, Michael Redmon and Darin Cathell, have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in an elaborate overtime fraud scheme.
The duo, according to court documents, falsified records to claim they worked numerous overtime shifts that they never actually completed. Michael Redmon, 58, of Selbyville, was handed a 13-month sentence and ordered to pay $81,890 in restitution and a fine of $50,000. Darin Cathell, 50, of Frankford, received two months in prison, followed by six months of home detention, and was also ordered to pay $67,790 in restitution and a fine of $25,000.
Redmon’s fraudulent claims accounted for at least 174 overtime shifts, totaling over 760 hours and nearly $82,000. Cathell falsely claimed at least 185 overtime shifts, amounting to over 800 hours and approximately $68,000. Some of the stolen funds were derived from federal grant funds allocated to the department.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Julianne E. Murray emphasized the severity of their crimes, saying, “Michael Redmon and Darin Cathell betrayed the trust of the Bethany Beach community and their colleagues by engaging in this fraudulent scheme over many years.”
FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that no one is above the law and the commitment to rooting out corruption. The sentences were announced after sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Colm F. Connolly.
