BOSTON – In a stunning turn of events, ex-New England Patriots player Will D. Allen and former bank vice president Susan Daub have both pleaded guilty to participating in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
Allen, 38, from Davie, Fla., and Daub, 56, of Coral Spring, Fla., were arrested in June 2015 following charges by the Securities and Exchange Commission. They were charged with wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering for their roles in defrauding investors out of millions.
Between 2012 and April 2015, Allen and Daub, through their Massachusetts-based company Capital Financial Partners (CFP),骗取投资者超过3500万美元。尽管CFP确实向职业运动员发放了一些贷款,但Allen和Daub也把数百万投资者的钱转移到了自己的和其他商业活动中。
The duo collected funds from investors under the guise of backing high-interest, short-term loans to athletes, but instead used the money for personal gain. They have repaid less than $22 million to date.
Allen pleaded guilty on November 14, 2016, and Daub followed suit on a court appearance later that month. Sentencing for both is set for February 2017.
The charges against them carry sentences of up to 20 years for wire fraud and conspiracy, and up to 10 years for money laundering. The actual sentences are expected to be less severe, with judges considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
