Former Procurement Manager Jailed for $397K Embezzlement Scheme
Marwan Kawar, 60, of Crown Point, Indiana, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for masterminding a complex embezzlement scheme that netted him nearly $400,000.
According to court documents, Kawar, a former procurement manager, created a sham company to deceive his employer into mailing checks for goods and services that never existed. The scheme ran from September 2012 until February 2019.
Kawar was found to have devised a plan to create and submit fraudulent purchase orders, invoices, and shipping receipts in the name of his sham company. This led to his employer mailing checks to the fake company, which Kawar controlled.
At his sentencing, Kawar was also ordered to pay restitution of $397,223.29 to his victim, as well as serve 2 years of supervised release. The cash he had in his possession when federal agents apprehended him at O’Hare Airport will be applied towards his restitution.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly Kelley and Diane Berkowitz.
Kawar’s attempt to flee the country was thwarted when federal agents caught him at O’Hare Airport before he could board a flight.
Acting U.S. Attorney Tina L. Nommay announced Kawar’s sentencing, which serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of white-collar crime.
