POCATELLO, ID – A Fort Hall man is facing federal time after admitting to possessing a dangerous and illegal weapon. Tyrell Dixey, 33, entered a guilty plea Wednesday in U.S. District Court for possession of an unregistered firearm, according to U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis.
The bust went down back on January 30, 2017, when the Fort Hall Police Department pulled over a vehicle. Dixey was riding shotgun, and officers found a Mossberg, Model 500A, 12 gauge shotgun tucked inside. The weapon wasn’t just any shotgun – it had a barrel measuring less than 18 inches, a clear violation of federal law. Fingerprints later confirmed Dixey had handled the illegal firearm.
Federal statutes strictly prohibit possessing a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18 inches unless it’s properly registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Dixey failed to do so, landing him in the crosshairs of a federal investigation. He’s now looking at up to 10 years in prison, a hefty $250,000 fine, and a potential three years of supervised release after serving his time.
The ATF, alongside the Fort Hall Police Department, spearheaded the investigation. This wasn’t a standalone case, however. It’s part of the Department of Justice’s broader “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at uniting law enforcement at all levels to combat violent crime and reclaim neighborhoods. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made tackling rising violent crime a top priority.
In October 2017, Sessions announced a revitalization of PSN, directing U.S. Attorney’s Offices to refine their crime reduction strategies based on lessons learned since the program’s 2001 launch. This case serves as a stark example of the program’s focus on taking illegal firearms off the streets and holding offenders accountable.
Dixey’s sentencing is scheduled for April 30, 2018, before Chief U.S. District Court Judge B. Lynn Winmill. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing outcome.
