Fort Thompson Man Jailed for Domestic Assault

A 22-year-old Fort Thompson man has been sentenced to 41 months in custody for his role in a disturbing domestic assault case.

Santana Drapeau was found guilty by a federal jury in Pierre on October 10, 2014, of two counts of Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender and one count of Simple Assault.

The conviction stemmed from incidents occurring on May 18, 2014, in which Drapeau assaulted his spouse and intimate partner at two different locations.

According to the investigation, Drapeau hit the victim in the face at a bonfire and physically assaulted her at a residence. The assaults occurred at a time when Drapeau had three final convictions in Crow Creek Sioux Tribal Court for domestic violence against the same victim.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which also included 2 years of supervised release, $954 in restitution, and a $210 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency.

Drapeau was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to a disturbing chapter in this case.

With this sentencing, the community can finally find some sense of justice and closure for the victim in this case.
