Fort Thompson Man Sentenced for Domestic Assault
A Fort Thompson man has been sentenced to 30 months in custody for a domestic assault incident. Gary Walking Bull, 37, was handed down the sentence on November 3, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 21, 2014, at Walking Bull’s grandmother’s house in Fort Thompson. The victim suffered an orbital fracture and three fractures to her nose, requiring surgery to repair. At the time of the assault, Walking Bull had two prior convictions for Domestic Abuse in Crow Creek Sioux Tribal Court.
Walking Bull was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 22, 2014, and pled guilty on July 14, 2014. He was sentenced to 30 months in custody, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case. Walking Bull was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions. Domestic violence is a serious issue, and this conviction serves as a reminder that it will not be tolerated.
The U.S. Attorney’s office commends the bravery of the victim in coming forward and seeking justice. The office also expresses gratitude to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Marshals Service for their tireless efforts in investigating and prosecuting this case.
