A tragic incident on the Crow Creek Reservation has led to a 30-month prison sentence for Fort Thompson’s Antoine Medicine Crow, Jr.
On April 26, 2019, Medicine Crow, then 38, was behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. He attempted to pass another car at a high speed, lost control, and rolled over multiple times. His ejected passenger ultimately succumbed to injuries.
Medicine Crow was immediately taken into custody after his guilty plea on June 29, 2020. He will serve 30 months in federal prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. A special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund was also ordered.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, which involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency. The incident occurred in Buffalo County, South Dakota.
Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on September 21, 2020. U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced the sentencing.
Medicine Crow was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 13, 2019, following the incident. His guilty plea marked a significant step in the case, which was carefully investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency.
