Ruby Sazue, Larceny, South Dakota 2014

A disturbing case of larceny has come to an end in Fort Thompson, South Dakota. On March 3, 2014, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down a sentence to Ruby Sazue, a 20-year-old Fort Thompson woman.

Sazue was convicted of Larceny after a federal grand jury indicted her on November 14, 2013. She pleaded guilty on January 13, 2014, to the charges against her.

The incident in question occurred on the evening of October 30, 2013, when Sazue learned of the death of her former significant other. In a fit of anger and grief, she stole the motor vehicle belonging to the victim in an attempt to drive to Pierre. However, her reckless actions took a turn for the worse as she wrecked the vehicle near the power plant outside of Fort Thompson.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges was responsible for prosecuting the case.

The court’s decision took into account the severity of Sazue’s actions as well as her apparent remorse for what she had done. As a result, she was sentenced to time served (105 days), 18 months of Supervised Release, $7,300 in restitution, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The community in Fort Thompson can now begin to heal from this incident, but the memory of the tragedy will linger. As for Sazue, she will have to live with the consequences of her actions for a long time to come.

The sentence handed down to Sazue serves as a reminder that the law will not tolerate such behavior and that those who break it will face the full weight of justice.
