A 27-year-old man from Fort Washakie, Wyoming has been sentenced to 175 months in prison for aggravated sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact of a minor.
Avery Fitzgerald Brown, 27, of Fort Washakie, Wyoming, was sentenced to 175 months of imprisonment, followed by 10 years of supervised release, by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Scott W. Skavdahl.
Brown pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact of a minor in a change of plea hearing held on April 28, 2021. The abuse occurred on the Wind River Indian Reservation, beginning in March of 2006 and lasting until October 2020.
According to court records, one of the victims disclosed multiple instances of sexual assault by Brown in a letter to a physician with the Indian Health Service.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bob Murray praised the work of federal agents and community members who stood up for the victims and worked tirelessly to bring Brown to justice.
‘It takes courage for any victim – especially child victims – to come forward and disclose sexual abuse,’ Murray said. ‘We should all be thankful that a young girl bravely spoke up and helped stop this defendant from hurting any other children.’
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kerry J. Jacobson prosecuting the case.
