Francesco Gulino, Reentry of Illegal Alien, West Virginia 2013

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – In a shocking turn of events, a federal grand jury has indicted Francesco Gulino, an Italian national, for reentry of an illegal alien in West Virginia.

Gulino, 43, was previously convicted in May 2009 in the Court of Common Pleas, Cuyahoga County, Ohio of attempted felonious assault. He was later deported on or about April 20, 2011.

On April 20, 2013, Gulino was arrested by police in Raleigh County, W.Va., for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The investigation found that Gulino had not obtained approval of the Secretary of Homeland Security to reapply for admission to the United States.

Gulino faces up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted. His case is being prosecuted as part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs.

Assistant United States Attorney Erik S. Goes is handling the prosecution. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the investigation.

The charge contained in the indictment is merely an accusation, and Gulino is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Gulino’s indictment is a stark reminder of the ongoing problem of prescription drug abuse in West Virginia. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers in communities across the Southern District.

The indictment is a significant development in the ongoing effort to combat prescription drug abuse in West Virginia. It highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and working together to address the complex issues surrounding prescription drug abuse.
