Francis Cahill, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Maine 2024

BANGOR, Maine: A Corinth man pleaded guilty in federal court today to being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Darcie N. McElwee announced. Francis Cahill, 73, admitted to owning two firearms in his residence, despite a 1978 conviction in Texas for murder, which prohibits him from possessing firearms.

According to court records, the FBI and the Denton, Texas Police were tasked with locating Cahill, who was initially known as Bruce Cossett. The Maine State Police assisted in locating Cahill at his residence in Corinth, where he was arrested. Cahill confessed to possessing the firearms during a subsequent interview with law enforcement.

A search of Cahill’s residence uncovered a .22 caliber rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun. Cahill faces up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine. If the Court determines he is an armed career criminal, he faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison. He also faces up to three years of supervised release.

FBI agents, the Denton, Texas Police, the Maine State Police, and the ATF investigated the case. The Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office also assisted with the case. A federal district judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The guilty plea was part of a coordinated effort to dismantle the illegal firearm trade in Maine. Cahill will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing firearms after a previous conviction. Cahill’s actions demonstrate the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and adhering to the law.
