Swanville Man Sentenced for Unlawful Firearms Possession

Bangor, Maine – In a shocking case of gun crime, John T. Hines, 50, of Swanville, Maine, was sentenced to time served in prison for unlawfully possessing firearms. Hines, who had previously been convicted of domestic violence assault, was found to be in possession of a loaded .357 Ruger revolver, two rifles and a shotgun at his residence.

According to court records, two Waldo County Sheriff’s deputies went to Hines’ residence to investigate a neighbor’s complaint of hearing gunfire coming from the property. Upon arrival, they found Hines in possession of the loaded firearms, which he was prohibited from possessing under federal law.

The investigation, conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior from Hines. His previous conviction for domestic violence assault made him ineligible to possess any firearms.

Hines pled guilty to the charge on August 30, 2016, and was subsequently sentenced to time served in prison. His sentence equates to approximately 10 months in prison.

Assistant United States Attorney Jim Moore made a statement regarding the case, highlighting the importance of enforcing federal laws related to firearm possession. “This case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of violating federal laws related to firearm possession,” Moore said.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. This case serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit loopholes in the law to possess firearms illegally.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office commend the efforts of all those involved in the investigation and prosecution of Hines.
