Man Charged with Murder on Fishing Vessel Off Massachusetts Coast
BOSTON – A man from Mexico has been charged with murder in connection with a deadly attack on a fishing vessel 55 miles off the coast of Massachusetts.
Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, was indicted on one count of murder in the second degree, one count of attempted murder, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to court documents, the attack occurred on September 23, 2018, aboard the fishing vessel Captain Billy Haver, which was sailing with seven crew members, including Meave Vazquez.
It is alleged that Meave Vazquez assaulted a crew member with a hammer and knife and then struck another crew member with the hammer.
Two of the victims were taken aboard a nearby German cruise ship, the Mein Schiff 6, where one was pronounced dead by the ship’s doctor.
Meave Vazquez is currently being held without bail and will face deportation proceedings upon completion of any sentence imposed.
The charge of second-degree murder provides for a sentence of up to life in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
The charge of attempted murder provides for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
The charge of assault with a dangerous weapon provides for a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
