Canadian national John D. Fraser, also known as ‘John Knight,’ has been handed a severe rebuke after attempting to re-enter the United States despite an earlier removal order. Today in U.S. District Court in Bangor, Maine, Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. sentenced Fraser to time served—three months and 22 days—and one year of supervised release.
On November 20, 2016, Fraser’s fraudulent attempt at crossing the border was thwarted when a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer referred him for secondary inspection after his arrival in a vehicle bearing Florida registration plates. The defendant initially denied living and working in the U.S. without authorization but eventually admitted to having done so for over 30 years.
Further investigation revealed that Fraser had been previously ordered removed from the United States back in 2010 under the name John D. Fraser. His significant criminal history was a stark reminder of the consequences of ignoring such orders, and now, Fraser is paying the price with his freedom.
Acting U.S. Attorney Richard W. Murphy highlighted the importance of border security and the enforcement of removal orders, stating that individuals who attempt to circumvent these measures will face the full brunt of the law. The investigation leading to Fraser’s capture and subsequent sentence was a joint effort between CBP and the Department of Homeland Security.
Fraser’s case serves as a cautionary tale for others contemplating similar actions, demonstrating the serious consequences of illegal re-entry after being legally removed from the United States.
