Spokane Man Sentenced to 4 Years in Federal Prison for Stealing Mail

Fred Nolan, Jr., 45, of Spokane, Washington, has been sentenced to 4 years in federal prison for stealing mail. Nolan pleaded guilty to the felony charge of Possession of Stolen U.S. Mail and the misdemeanor charge of Theft of Property Used by the United States Postal Service.

According to court proceedings, Nolan broke into the Flour Mill in Spokane in late May 2013 and gained access to the locked mail distribution room. Surveillance video later revealed Nolan breaking into the mail distribution room and leaving the building with two bags.

The Spokane Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, which led to Nolan’s arrest. During an unrelated burglary investigation, detectives found a piece of mail from the Flour Mill with Nolan’s fingerprint on it.

Nolan has at least 38 prior felony convictions for theft and burglary-related conduct. United States Attorney Michael C. Ormsby stated that interference with the U.S. Mails will not be tolerated in the Eastern District of Washington.

Ormsby commended the cooperative investigative efforts of the Spokane Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service. The case was prosecuted by Caitlin Baunsgard, an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.

Nolan’s sentence includes 4 years in federal prison, followed by a 3-year term of court supervision upon release. The case serves as an example of the Eastern District of Washington’s commitment to aggressively prosecuting crimes that affect the Mails.
