SHREVEPORT, LA – Fredarius D. Jackson, 25, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 60 months for being a convicted felon illegally packing heat. U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote delivered the sentence today, adding three years of supervised release to Jackson’s term. The case underscores the ATF’s continued crackdown on individuals prohibited from owning firearms.
The bust went down on May 29, 2021, when Shreveport Police Department officers collared Jackson outside a Dove Street residence. He wasn’t just empty-handed. Cops found a Taurus 9mm pistol and a TNW Firearms ASR rifle – complete with a high-capacity 50-round drum magazine – in his possession, along with a stash of ammunition. At the time, Jackson was already on state probation for a prior felony, a clear signal he knew he wasn’t supposed to have guns.
ATF agents took a close look at the recovered weapons, confirming they were both fully functional. This wasn’t some rusty antique; these were working firearms in the hands of a man legally barred from owning them. The discovery triggered the federal charge, and the case quickly escalated, landing on the radar of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana.
U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown made the announcement today, framing the sentence as a victory for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement. PSN aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by focusing on strategic enforcement and community partnerships. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of the program in May 2021, emphasizing trust-building and preventative measures.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael T. Shannon prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence gathered by both the ATF and Shreveport Police Department. The joint investigation highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling gun crime. While the 60-month sentence won’t erase the risk Jackson posed, it does remove a dangerous individual from the streets of Shreveport – at least for a while.
The case serves as a stark reminder that possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon carries serious federal consequences.
