NEW ORLEANS, LA – Jarren Lee, 35, of New Orleans, is facing up to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to violating the Federal Gun Control Act. The plea, entered before U.S. District Judge Darrel J. Papillion on March 19, stems from a late-night traffic stop that uncovered a trove of illegal weaponry.
According to court documents, the New Orleans Police Department initially pulled Lee over after discovering he was driving a stolen vehicle. The situation quickly escalated when officers searched the car and found two firearms, including one reported stolen. Both weapons were equipped with high-capacity magazines – a detail that will likely weigh heavily during sentencing.
Lee isn’t a stranger to the law. Records show he has racked up multiple prior felony convictions, primarily related to drug possession. This history of criminal activity significantly impacts his current predicament, disqualifying him from legally owning any firearms. The feds are making an example of repeat offenders like Lee, hoping to curb the rising tide of gun violence in the city.
The case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through coordinated law enforcement efforts and community engagement. The Department of Justice launched a renewed focus on PSN in 2021, emphasizing trust-building, community support, and strategic enforcement.
Federal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the New Orleans Police Department, worked jointly on the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Haller, Senior Litigation Counsel, is handling the prosecution.
Judge Papillion has scheduled Lee’s sentencing for July 16. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release, in addition to a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
