Felony Firearm Possession Charges Bring Stephentown Man to Justice
A 36-year-old Stephentown man has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm. On September 27, 2015, Joseph M. Jackson was found to be in possession of a Rohm Gesellschaft .38 caliber revolver and live ammunition.
According to authorities, the firearm and ammunition were discovered in a safe within a car registered to Jackson. The discovery marked a significant development in a case being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) New York Field Division and the New York State Police.
United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian, along with Delano A. Reid, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF New York Field Division, announced the guilty plea. Jackson’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Farber.
Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is a serious offense, and Jackson now faces significant penalties. He could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison, fined up to $250,000, and ordered to serve up to 3 years of supervised release.
U.S. District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino is set to impose the sentence on May 23, 2016. It is worth noting that actual sentences often fall short of the maximum penalties.
The guilty plea brings an end to a long and complex investigation. As authorities continue to work towards keeping communities safe, cases like Jackson’s serve as a reminder of the consequences of breaking the law.
