Anthony Young, Bank & Legion Robbery, Maryland 2024

FREDERICK, MD – Anthony Young, 38, of Jefferson, Maryland, will spend the next twelve years in federal prison for terrorizing Frederick County, after being sentenced Friday for the armed robberies of both an American Legion post and a local bank. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander handed down the sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, bringing a measure of closure to a pair of brazen crimes that rattled the community in late 2019.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, led by Erek L. Barron, alongside the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office under Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno, and the Frederick Police Department, spearheaded the investigation. According to court documents, Young, along with an accomplice, stormed the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 on November 18, 2019. The pair brandished a handgun, savagely striking an employee twice in the mouth before binding him with zip ties and making off with a substantial amount of cash.

Less than three weeks later, on December 5, 2019, Young allegedly struck again, this time targeting the Woodsboro Bank in Frederick. Witnesses described a suspect mirroring the one from the Legion robbery, wielding a small black handgun and pilfering a large sum of money before fleeing in a vehicle quickly identified as registered to Young. The pattern was clear, and law enforcement moved swiftly.

On December 16, 2019, federal agents and Frederick PD executed search warrants at Young’s residence. The search yielded damning evidence – clothing and items directly matching the descriptions of the suspect in both robberies. Confronted with the mounting evidence, Young confessed to both crimes after waiving his rights. The recovery of these items solidified the case against him and removed any doubt as to his involvement.

This case was presented as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. The Department of Justice recently reinforced PSN with a renewed focus on fostering trust, supporting community organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and meticulously measuring results. This sentencing serves as a stark warning that such violent acts will not be tolerated.

U.S. Attorney Barron praised the collaborative efforts of the FBI and Frederick Police Department, and specifically recognized Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Sippel, Jr., for his skillful prosecution of the case.
