FRESNO, Calif. — In a relentless crackdown on fentanyl trafficking, 26-year-old Ady Perez of Fresno faced the music as U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston sentenced him to five years behind bars for his role in the deadly drug trade.
Perez, caught red-handed with over 40 grams of pure fentanyl, intended to distribute 1,500 pills that could have caused a wave of addiction and death. The Fresno native’s scheme unraveled when he attempted to flee police in a high-speed chase, only to collide with a law enforcement vehicle, leading to his capture.
Upon arrest, authorities didn’t stop there. A search of Perez’s apartment yielded two loaded firearms, cash in significant amounts, and additional fentanyl pills and Farmapram (a benzodiazepine) tablets, all ready for distribution on the streets.
This harrowing case was a joint effort by the Fresno Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cody S. Chapple and Arin Heinz prosecuted Perez, ensuring justice was served for those affected by his criminal activities.
Perez’s sentence is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking across California.
As communities grapple with the pervasive threat of fentanyl addiction, cases like Perez’s serve as a cautionary tale for those who would peddle such deadly substances. The Fresno community can take solace in knowing that justice has been served and that efforts to protect its citizens from such peril continue.
