Fruitland Man Sentenced for DWI Manslaughter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Farrell Bowman, a 29-year-old man from Fruitland, New Mexico, was sentenced to 74 months in prison for his conviction in a DWI manslaughter case.

On July 3, 2014, Bowman crashed into a vehicle containing two Native American men on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, New Mexico, killing them both. He was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Bowman was arrested in January 2015 and subsequently indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty to the indictment on August 12, 2015, and admitted to driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol, which led to the deaths of the two victims.

During his guilty plea, Bowman acknowledged that he operated the vehicle without using due caution and with a reckless disregard that imperiled the lives of others. He will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence.

The case was investigated by the Shiprock office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety, the Farmington office of the FBI, and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Raquel Ruiz-Velez prosecuted the case.

Bowman’s prison sentence serves as a harsh reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence. The Grimy Times urges all residents to think twice before getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
