Gardiner Man Charged in $15,000 Bank Heist
A brazen bank robbery that left the community shaken has led to the arrest of a 66-year-old Gardiner resident. John C. Slater, 66, of Gardiner, is accused of robbing the Bank of Maine in Hallowell on June 23, 2014.
According to court records, Slater handed a bank employee a note that read: “Im Here to Rob your Bank, no silent Alarms my cell phone rings, your all dead, I have a hand grenade, and a gun, no marked bills, or inked, if so, one day I will come back and kill all of you, do you understand.???”
The defendant is expected to make an initial appearance in the U.S. District Court in Bangor today at noon. If convicted, Slater faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Maine State Police, and the Hallowell police department.
A complaint is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

The people of Hallowell may finally get some closure after this shocking crime. The Bank of Maine was left shaken, but thankfully no one was physically harmed.
