Cape Girardeau Man Sentenced for Firearm Possession

A Cape Girardeau, Missouri man has been sentenced to prison for violating federal firearms laws. On February 22, [no year stated] as a plea, Garrick B. Madison pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Today, United States District Judge Matthew T. Schelp sentenced Madison to 57 months in prison.

The crime dates back to June 7, 2020, when an officer with the Sikeston Public Safety made a traffic stop on a vehicle with a defective license plate lamp. Madison was a passenger in the vehicle at the time. During a consent search of the vehicle, the officer located a black Remington pistol concealed underneath the passenger seat where Madison was sitting.

When asked who the gun belonged to, Madison turned around, placed his hands behind his back, and began walking toward the officer. The officer took this as a non-verbal admission that the gun belonged to Madison.

Madison’s criminal history includes felony convictions for Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest by Fleeing in Scott County, Missouri. Due to these convictions, he is prohibited from possessing firearms.

This case was investigated by the Sikeston Public Safety and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Julie Hunter handled the prosecution.

The case highlights the importance of enforcing federal firearms laws and holding individuals accountable for violating them. It also serves as a reminder of the dangers of possessing firearms by individuals with felony convictions.
