Navajo Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Assault Charge in New Mexico
A violent crime has shaken the community in New Mexico. Gary Begay, a 23-year-old man from the Navajo Nation, has admitted to committing a heinous assault on March 14, 2015, on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, N.M.
According to the indictment, Begay committed the crimes of sexual assault and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. However, he has pleaded guilty to Count 2 of the indictment charging him with assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
During the incident, Begay allegedly struck the victim with his fists and a bottle, breaking the victim’s teeth and causing serious bodily injury. The victim suffered severe injuries, leaving him with broken teeth and other serious harm.
The case was investigated by the Farmington office of the FBI, the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety, and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Spindle is prosecuting the case.
Begay will be sentenced to nine years in federal prison followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court. A sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled.
The community is left reeling from the news of this violent crime. The people of New Mexico demand justice and accountability for those who commit such heinous acts.
