Gary Charles Dixon Jr., Meth Smuggling, Alabama 2023

Birmingham, Ala. — A corrections officer sworn to uphold the law inside one of Alabama’s most secure prisons instead chose to betray that trust, smuggling nearly half a kilo of crystal meth into the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. Gary Charles Dixon, Jr., 36, was sentenced today to 87 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to distributing fifty grams or more of methamphetamine — a crime that endangered inmates, staff, and the integrity of the entire corrections system.

Dixon, once tasked with enforcing order behind bars, exploited his position to traffic drugs directly into the Bessemer prison where he was employed. On November 15, 2020, he attempted to bring 497 grams of high-purity methamphetamine through the facility’s gates — a brazen act that reeks of institutional corruption and personal greed. The load, valued at thousands on the street, could have fueled violence, addiction, and chaos within the prison walls.

U.S. Senior District Court Judge Karon O. Bowdre wasted no time in delivering justice, handing down the 87-month sentence as a warning to others who might consider abusing their badge for profit. Dixon’s guilty plea on July 20, 2021, ended a DEA-led investigation that peeled back layers of deception, revealing how easily contraband can infiltrate a state-run prison when insiders turn rogue.

“Smuggling contraband into our state prisons compromises the safety of everyone in the facility,” said U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona. “This type of conduct, especially by those sworn to protect the institution, will not be tolerated. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute corrections officers who violate positions of public trust.”

Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Brad L. Byerley echoed the sentiment, stating, “Corrections officers have the responsibility to serve the public and protect their communities. This defendant abused that responsibility and used his position to distribute drugs. By doing so, he not only violated his duties as a corrections officer, but also endangered the health and safety of inmates and staff through his actions.”

The case was investigated by the DEA and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Cross. Dixon now faces years behind the same walls he once patrolled — a fitting end for a man who traded his uniform for a drug runner’s paycheck.
