Gary Gibbs, Methamphetamine Distribution, IA 2019

A ten-year federal prison sentence has been handed down to Gary Gibbs, 48, of Soldier, Iowa, for his role in a sprawling methamphetamine distribution ring that flooded Monona County with over half a kilo of the drug. Gibbs was sentenced on May 14, 2019, following a guilty plea entered months earlier.

Gibbs pleaded guilty on November 13, 2018, to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. The conspiracy ran from January 2017 through February 2018 and involved multiple co-conspirators sourcing and selling meth across western Iowa. Gibbs admitted in court to pulling supply from Omaha, Nebraska, and funneling it into rural Iowa communities.

The operation began unraveling on November 23, 2017, when a Monona County Sheriff’s deputy pulled Gibbs over and caught him trying to ditch evidence. As the deputy watched, Gibbs tossed a bag from the passenger window. Deputies recovered it minutes later—inside were approximately 3 ounces of meth, 1 ounce of marijuana, and tools of the trade: packaging materials and cash. About half an ounce of meth was found on Gibbs during the stop.

When federal agents arrested Gibbs on June 12, 2018, they found another ¼ ounce of methamphetamine on his person and roughly $1,400 in cash. The discovery reinforced the prosecution’s argument that Gibbs was deeply embedded in a sustained drug trafficking enterprise, not an isolated offender.

Gibbs was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City. The 120-month sentence is followed by a mandatory five-year term of supervised release. With no parole in the federal system, Gibbs will serve every day behind bars. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to a federal penitentiary.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and built through collaboration between the Monona County Sheriff’s Office and the Tri-State Drug Task Force. The task force includes personnel from the DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Nebraska State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, U.S. Marshals Service, and multiple local agencies across Iowa and Nebraska. Court records are available under case number 18-4047 at the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system.
