Gates Man Pleads Guilty to Transporting a Child for Sex Acts

A 48-year-old man from Gates, New York, pleaded guilty today to transporting a child across state lines with the intent of engaging in illegal sexual activity. Michael J. Rolfe, a long distance truck driver, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, a maximum penalty of life, a fine of $250,000 or both.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Marisa J. Miller, in August 2012, Rolfe took a child who was less than 12 years old on a trip from Rochester, New York to locations in Texas. Rolfe admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the child while outside of New York State.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

The plea is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero, along with Investigators from the New York State Police, under the direction of Superintendent Joseph D’Amico.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 7th, at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Frank P. Geraci. This case highlights the need for continued vigilance in protecting our children from predators who seek to exploit them.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, remains committed to bringing perpetrators to justice and ensuring that victims receive the support they need to heal and rebuild their lives.
