Bank Robber Sentenced to 115 Months in Prison
A brazen bank robbery in Central City, Illinois, has ended with a hefty prison sentence for the perpetrator. On August 26, 2016, George David Treece, 38, of Alabama, entered the Farmers State Bank and demanded money from a bank teller.
The teller, following procedure, removed the money from her drawer and placed it on the counter. Treece then took the money and fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase through the streets of Central City. The chase ended when Treece crashed his vehicle, bringing an end to his desperate attempt to evade capture.
Later that day, Treece admitted to robbing the bank, bringing an end to a tense and chaotic standoff with law enforcement. The case was investigated by the Central City Police Department, Centralia Police Department, Wamac Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Angela Scott was assigned to the case.
Treece has been held without bond since his arrest on a criminal complaint on August 29, 2016. His sentence, handed down on March 21, 2017, includes a term of imprisonment of 115 months to be followed by a three-year term of supervised release.
Treece was also ordered to pay a $300 fine, a $100 special assessment, and $345 in restitution to the Farmers State Bank. The total amount of restitution is a fraction of the estimated $345 taken by Treece during the robbery.
The bank robbery was a shocking display of brazen criminal behavior, and the subsequent investigation and sentencing are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement in Illinois. Treece’s sentence serves as a reminder that bank robbery is a serious crime with severe consequences.
